In addition to issues such as quality and products, the import tax on packaging is among the most critical concerns for many international businesses. Compared to other countries in the region, such as China, and Indonesia, … the import tax on packaging in Vietnam is relatively low. Why is that so? Let’s explore this through the following article with Haplast.
Favorable Tax Policies
One of the reasons why import taxes on packaging from Vietnam are lower than in other countries in the region is the government’s implementation of favorable tax policies. This policy aims to attract investment and promote exports, including reducing or exempting import taxes on packaging materials such as plastic. Therefore, when international businesses import packaging from Vietnam, the products become competitive, yielding substantial profits.
Free Trade Agreements
As of now, Vietnam has signed numerous free trade agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), VJEPA, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and more.
With the EVFTA Agreement signed and effective from August 1, 2020, all plastic products exported from Vietnam to the EU enjoy a 0% tax rate. Currently, within the ASEAN region, only Singapore has an FTA with the EU, but this country’s plastic exports to the EU are negligible. Therefore, Vietnamese packaging manufacturers have a significant competitive advantage when accessing the EU market with a 0% tax rate, while other competitors do not enjoy this tax rate.
These agreements bring many preferential trade benefits, including reducing or exempting import taxes on certain items such as packaging, footwear, and clothing, providing significant advantages for businesses in the packaging industry.
Economic Partnerships
Low import taxes on packaging in Vietnam are partly due to Vietnam establishing extensive trade relations with many economic partners worldwide. Reducing import taxes on packaging helps enhance competitiveness and stimulate the export and import activities of packaging companies in Vietnam.
